SP1 vs FSX – performance results

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Many feel that smoothness or lack of stutters is the best measure of performance in the sim, but this is difficult to measure.  I certainly find SP1 to be much smoother, and a greatly improved simming experience.  That said, here’s my static frame rate comparison. Overall you can see I’ve seen a 40% jump in framerates, pretty evenly spaced over different settings.  Performance increase varied at the test airports from 33 to 50%.  Well done ACES!

My system:  AMD 4200+ X2 (dual core), 2 Gb RAM, 7900GT (256mb) GPU, 800 Gb SATA-II Raid-0 drive array, Asus A8N-SLI motherboard.  FSX now takes full advantage of my dual core system, and is claimed to take advantage of more cores as well.

Results by airport:

  • EDDF: 21.4 to 29.3, +37%
  • CYYZ: 20.5 to 27.3, +33%
  • KLAX: 18.0 to 24.5, +36%
  • KORD: 19.2 to 27.8, +45%
  • KSEA: 18.8 to 28.2, +50%

Results by settings:

  • high settings: 9.8 to 13.4, +37%
  • no autogen, no traffic: 15.4 to 22.3, +44%
  • no autogen, no traffic, water low: 26.8 to 38.4, +43%
  • no autogen, no traffic, water low, fullscreen: 26.2 to 35.5, +35%

I have a dual core 2 duo, 2 gig of ram, 8800 gtx video card with 768 meg of memory, intel 2.66 ghz and plenty of hard disk. I installed sp1 and the highest frame rates i got was 4.5 fps. even flying over water with not much scenery. I lowered the settings and no change. near heavy airport such as chicago o’hare, my fps is 2.2 .
I am not able to play the game since the frame rate is so slow and everything just jitters. can someone help me? i have had this issue for quiet some time. the motherboard i have is extreme gamer by ASUS. I ran mark06 and my score is 9855 which is very good.
but yet, fsx is not playable at all due to the low low performance.
Microsoft support were useless, were unable to help me.

I got 2.8 intel pentium Dual core processors 2Gb of RAM and a Geforce 7300LE 512Mb video card and i had FSX settings up all the way and it ran just fine “I have a dual core 2 duo, 2 gig of ram, 8800 gtx video card with 768 meg of memory, intel 2.66 ghz and plenty of hard disk.” you are lacking RAM memory, you need atleast 2Gb of RAM to run fsx decently

Well I’m stunned, I have a Q6600 quad processor, 2GB Corsair XMS2 800mhz, Asus P5B Deluxe M/Board, 8800GTX 768mb Graphics card, running Vista home premium with nothing else installed except FSX on a 500GB Sata drive and with all the sliders set to low @ 1024×768 anti alising switched off, blooming etc all off and no traffic the best I can achieve is 12fps dipping to 6fps… WHat have I got to do to get FSX to run properly.

Kev, there are bizarre situations which I don’t think are fully understood when a spectacular platfrom like yours has terrible performance. I suggest you read Phil Taylor’s blog thoroughly at http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/default.aspx

    Good luck!

I have exactly same problem. I upgraded my system from AMD 2.7Ghz. I could run FSX at very high setting getting around 20FPS but with core 2 duo @3.2ghz I get 2.2 fps!!!

Its strange that some systems have a problem My older system AMD2800+ with
1 gig of ram and a 660gt video card ran FSX at a locked fsp of 20 ran FSX a lot smoother than FS9 I have installed Vancouver+ and it slowed it down especially over the downtown area . so I bought a 7600GT superclocked with 512MB of DDR2 ram and it improved a lot. But I had a major Blurries problem when flying towards the down town area
I upped my ram to 1.5 gigs and that
solved that. Sure I have all the ai turned off and My frame rate locked
at 17 fsp but I still find it runs smoother than fs9 on my set up . I find that even at 10fsp there
is better performance than FS9 at 20fsp. Is there realy an advantage to running a high frame rate ?

Has anyone had a problem with the screen shot function with FSX the first couple of times I hit V to take a screenshot it worked fine but now it freezes and takes a long time to get going again?
